Understanding The Different Components of The Gutter System | Jerrys Gutters

Gutters are a very important component of your home’s structure, but did you know that gutters are more than just single pieces of metal half pipes? They are complex systems that consist of various types of materials that keep water away from your home, foundation, and roof.

Besides the actual gutters, here are a few of the various components that keep that water out:

Downspouts
While the actual gutter collects rainwater this water needs to go somewhere. That’s where downspouts come in. They are the paths that extend from the roof to the ground and make sure the water flows seamlessly from the gutter into the ground.

End Caps
End caps serve as the barrier at the sides of each of the gutter pieces. By having end caps will then force the water to have to go down the downspout as it is the only available path for it to go.

Elbows
Similar to the way they work on humans, elbows connect two gutter pieces around a corner of a home where there are odd angles or curves in the system.

Gutter Guards
Gutter guards help in preventing gutters from becoming clogged. They usually sit above the gutter to keep unwanted items out of the gutter such as leaves, branches, and even animal nests.

Gutters are complex, yet very smart systems that are extremely important components of the home. Understanding the various parts will help you to know when cleaning and maintenance are needed.
